4. Past perfect

4.1. Structure

The Past perfect tense in English is composed of two parts: the past tense of the verb to have (had) + the past participle of the main verb.

Affirmative

  • I had finished. (I'd finished)
  • They had eaten.(They'd eaten)

Negative

I / he / she / it   had not
(hadn't)
