USOS:
En català, la forma “hi ha” (expressa tant el singular com el plural) del verb “haver-hi”; en anglès; en canvi, hi ha una forma pel singular (there is, there's) i una altra pel plural (there are). La forma “hi havia” en el passat, també té una forma per al singular (there was) i una altra per al plural (there were).
Exemples:
There's is a ball in the park. (=Hi ha una pilota al parc)
There isn't a ball in the garden. (=No hi ha una pilota al jardí)
Is there a man in the hall? Yes, there is. / No, there isn't. (=Hi ha un home a l'entrada? Sí / No)
There are ten children in the house. (=Hi ha 10 nens a la casa)
There aren't five boys in the class. (=No hi ha 5 nois a la classe)
Are there three girls in the corridor? (=Hi ha tres noies al passadís?)
There was a ball in the park. (=Hi havia una pilota al parc.)
There wasn't a ball in the garden. (=No hi havia una pilota al jardí.)
Was there a man in the hall? (=Hi havia un home a l'entrada?) Yes, there was. (=Sí.) / No, there wasn't. (=No.)
Nota: Recordeu que l'article indefinit no té plural en anglès (a = un/una). Quan volem expressar que hi ha uns o unes (substantius plurals) en les formes negativa i interrogativa es fa servir any i en la forma afirmativa es fa servir some.
There aren't any judo classes today. (=No hi ha cap classe de judo avui / o / No hi ha classes de judo avui.)
Are there any posters on his bedroom walls? (=Hi ha alguns pòsters a la paret de la seva habitació? / o / Hi ha pòsters a la paret de la seva habitació?)
There are some books on the table. (=Hi ha alguns llibres a la taula /o/ hi ha llibres a la taula.)
