QUESTIONS:

  1. What kind of source is it? Is it a primary or a secondary source, textual, iconographic, cartographical…? (linkJustify your opinion (1 point)
It is a secondary source, it reports the conclusions of the historians after carrying out research.
It is also statistical- national budget-, public- it was published in a book. Economical and also political- it tries to make us conscious about something.

A secondary source often relies on primary sources (as well as other secondary sources)
  2. What was happening during this time period (1900-1930)?(2 points)
We are in the years before the second republic, and we can see how the national budget was spent.
The most important amount was in Defence (at that time called war). The army's percentage tripled education.

It was at the end of the "Restauracion", the second period time, and it shows us some of the most important problems in Spain: education (illiteracy) and army.

Students can discuss details from Bloc I: Restoration as a moment of bankruptcy, Alfonso XIII and the political instability and military problems.

  3. Explain the grahic, compare the budget in war and in education, and its consequences for the people (8 lines)./2 points)Justify your anwer
Its content is political and economical: the national budget in education and defence.
We must emphasize the fact that spending on defence was always well above 15%, while the education budget never exceeds 5%. The oscillations of the defence budget correspond to the presence of the Spanish army in Morocco and the constant clashes with Moroccan Kabila, eg Annual defeat.

The non-democratic state (remember the Restauracion tupinades, Morocco and the facts of the  Tragic Week- Setmana Tràgica- in Barcelona ) explains his lack of interest in Education and the great mass of illiterate population) . The Republic decided they had to modify these facts.
