Introduction

Difference between ‘institution’ in sense of rule set and in the sense of organisation – the rule set of European human, civic, social rights and how they are implemented in the major organisations of the EU.


Competences


Students should be aware of the three different types of fundamental rights (human, civic, social) and the ways democratic forms are implied in the organisation of the European Union as well as the limitations of implementation.

What types of basic rights are there? When/how did human rights and their function develop from basic protective rights over civic rights to social rights?

Which function have human rights for democracy?

What does democracy mean on the (transnational) level of the EU and what problems/deficits occur? Is the EU democratic?

How can ‘real’ freedom be implemented?
