"The short time that Joseph Bonaparte was king of Spain is considered the climax of enlightened despotism in Spain. The regime of "Don José" was however an imposition of the French, and it was not accepted by Spaniards, that considered that the Bourbons were their only legitimate kings. The reaction of the Spanish people to French domination was the great revolt of May 1808, the greatest revolt anywhere in Europe during that time. The revolt started on May 2 in Madrid, at the same time as the last member of the royal family was sent to exile. The revolt spread over the country in a few weeks, even before Napoleon had officially imposed a Bonaparte king. It was supported by all classes of the population (but the nobles were the least enthusiastic). its purpose was to save national independence and also to save the importance of traditional religion."
