Refresh your memory, page 5, Exercises 4 and 5 e R.01 Host Welcome to another episode of the Sporting Heroes
podcast. This week, journalist Andy Turner tells us why British
sportsman Jonnie Peacock is his hero.
Journalist I first heard about Jonnie Peacock after he won a
gold medal and broke the world record in the final of the
100 metres at the Paralympics in 2012. It was a wonderful
success story for a young man who knows all about
overcoming difficulties. Jonnie lost his right leg because of
meningitis when he was only five years old. When he went
back to school, his friends thought he couldn’t play sport any
more, but they were wrong … very wrong! Thanks to a new
prosthetic leg, he could walk and run and only eight months
after the operation, he won a race at the school sports day!
Then, when he was 15, he started training with the British
Paralympic team, and he has now won two Paralympic gold
medals. However, Jonnie isn’t just an athlete; he can also
dance! He starred in a British TV show called Strictly Come
Dancing and he was so good that he toured the country
to demonstrate his talents. Now in his late twenties, Jonnie
knows he can’t compete at such a high level forever and he
hopes that one day, he will be able to train other athletes.
He also has a message for all people that are suffering
difficulties. He simply says we should never, ever give up. SOLUTION 1What did Jonnie’s friends think he couldn’t do when he returned to school? They thought he couldn’t play sport (any more). He could walk and run. He can also dance. He can’t compete at such a high level forever. |
